August 04 Isn't It Ironic? Call me Alanis; I am thinking about writing a new verse, and this verse may actually contain irony. Last week I decided to break out of my "I can't believe people spend $4 on coffee when the circle K coffee is only $1.09 and there are 50 flavors of cream and Oreo cappuccino for free" soap box and try the new praline flavored ice coffee at a local coffee shop. I have very little interest in coffee unless it is infused with some type of decadent flavor, ice, and lots of milk (i.e. mint chocolate chip, bananas foster, pecan praline, white chocolate mousse, etc.), but I digress.
Upon entering the establishment, I am pleasantly surprised to be the only one in line and head directly to the counter. I begin examining the wall-mounted menu that is obviously written in some coffee language that we novices can't understand, when I notice a hand-made sign posted on the counter. It reads, "Please end all cell phone calls before ordering AND remember to be courteous." Okay, I admit the constant use of cell phones in public places is quite annoying these days, and maybe many people on earth need to be reminded to be courteous, but the sign somewhat insulted me. I am ALWAYS courteous; however, this is not the point. The point is that although I was the only person in line, I had to wait to be served. "Why?" you ask. Duh... because the girl working behind the counter was on her cell phone, of course. So patiently, or should I say courteously, I waited until she said, "No, I love you more" for the fortieth time and hung up. I instinctively began to chuckle at which time she looked up and questioned, "What?" Now, I am not one for normally calling people out, but this was unavoidable. I turned the sign to face her and asked her if she found it somewhat ironic. "Ironic??" blank stare.
"Yeah, you know, what you get is opposite of what you expect. Ironic. You on your cell phone when the sign tells me not to be on mine; therefore, I expect the rules would apply to all of us on both sides of the counter."
"I guess that's ironic. So what do you want?"
Courteous? I guess that word would be over her head also. Oh well, at least the coffee was good. |
